Current Events – We all need to keep up-to-date!

Being up-to-date on worldwide news is very important no matter what you do for a living or who you hang around. And I’m not just talking about your celebrity news… which we all know you stay current on… thank you TMZ.

I’ll admit it, I’m guilty too. I don’t usually frequent sites like TMZ or Perez Hilton, but I do check out MSN’s Wonderwall since MSN is my homepage on my laptop. I also get a lot of those updates from my Twitter page. While we sometimes focus on the celebrity or “weird” news because it is fun and exciting, I recently discovered how easy it is to stay up to date with actual current events.

There are a few different categories that I reccommend spending a few minutes checking out. This is as simple as reading five articles in each one. SO EASY!!

  • Current events in your local area – Most of the major area newspapers have websites now-a-days so you can get this quick without having to subscribe!
  • US (or your country) news – You can usually find this mixed in with local or world news, but you definitely need to know what is happening across the country. My favorite site for this is MSN or Yahoo! News.
  • World news – VERY important to know what is going on around the world. It is important for us not to forget that we are not the only ones here. For this, I like Yahoo! News again, but also CNN’s Newspulse which gives you short little descriptions of all the world’s happenings.
  • Celebrity/Weird news – Alright alright, I will let you have it. The only reason to know this is for some good small talk with people you don’t really want to hangout with. You know what I mean don’t you… we all have them. As I mentioned before I prefer MSN’s Wonderwall since it is less gossip and more news, but obviously if you want the hot juicy gossip, you’ll want to head over to TMZ or Perez Hilton. Come on people, they are the most well known for a reason…

Things that have recently come up in the news…

  • The brand new USS New York was just temporarily docked in New York (until Veterans Day). The ship’s bow is made out of 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center wreckage. If you live anywhere close to the area, PLEASE take the opportunity to go see it.
  • Also in ship news, the world’s largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Sea (Royal Carribean) is on it’s way to it’s US home of Florida. Traveling from Denmark it barely made it (2 ft. of clearance) under the Great Belt Fixed Link Bridge. It is 5-times bigger than the Titanic.
  • The TSA considers Britney Spears above us all as she was allowed to bring a Big Gulp through security. Or maybe they just figure she is too dumb to be dangerous?
  • Afghanistan has a new president. He was actually voted in months ago (and was already the current prez.), but the US talked him into allowing a re-do. On the eve of the new vote, the other canidate pulled out because he thought it was going to be an unfair election.
  • A poor 15-year-old boy in Florida was burned on 65% of his body by his “friends” when they poored rubbing alcohol all over him. He has been in the hospital since mid October. Kids are cruel!!
  • An American runner won the New York Marathon, the first time since 1982! Or did one? There is now debate that Mebrahtom Keflezighi is not an “American Runner” because he was born in another country. He has been here since he was 12, learned and trained to run in the US, and is an American citizen. Leave it alone peeps! Don’t we have more important issues to discuss than prove something wrong that makes us look better anyway?

There is a lot more out there to read, but I wanted to share those little bits. See news can be entertaining and weird in itself. Sometimes it is sad, but that is life baby!

Anyone else have some great news sites? Please share!!
