Holiday Break – Rest or Work?
So our holiday break has come to an end
*tear*. Hopefully you had a great break, I know I sure did…
… OR NOT!
Let’s put it this way. I didn’t do (or get anything done) that I wanted/needed to over this entire weekend. Well except for one thing, but we will get to that later. The reason I am sharing this with you is because it will explain why I have been MIA for a while as well as a chance for me to vent a little. Sorry!!
WEDNESDAY
LUCKILY I had a half day at work. When I got home, my mother and I ran over to the grocery store, two of them actually, to get the final ingredients (or so I thought) for the pies and other Thanksgiving food items we were in charge of. On the way home (groceries included) we drove to the bank and the car dealership to pick up my mother’s car. Rushed home, got the groceries put away and had to go to CrossFit for our last workout of the week (due to the holidays, not laziness).
We got home and had a quick dinner of Turkey Bacon BLTs so we could start working on the six pies we were making. BUT, we didn’t make it that far. We made the pie dough, but we were so tired that we decided to make the pies on Thursday morning. It is actually my mom’s job to make the pie dough, so I took advantage of the free time to clean the downstairs bathroom and dust the living room.
**SIDENOTE: My friends are throwing a massive Christmas party in a few weeks and a couple of my other friends who will be going with me are going to be staying at my house. In my family, house guests mean the house has to be SPOTLESS! We are talking model home spotless! Makes my head want to explode, but it means a lot of cleaning, thus the cleaning of the bathroom and dusting when I could/should have gone to bed.**
Finally I got to bed and passed out.
THURSDAY
Woke up, I think about seven (way too early on a holiday), maybe it was earlier, who friggin’ knows. Started the morning with a surprise trip to the grocery store. Not too bad given that it was Thanksgiving.
Spent the rest of the day (approximately 8-3) either cleaning the downstairs, dusting plants and other surfaces or baking pies.
We wound up with four pumpkin pies, one pecan and one apple pie. Plus I had to make my famous green bean casserole.
Finally the Thanksgiving celebration was upon us and we headed over to my cousin’s new house. Not only were we joined by my new cousin (2 months old), but my “cousin in-law’s” family. Interesting experience non-the-less. After chasing around three kids under three for several hours, we went home exhausted. The only problem, we were sans left overs. I mean, what is that about!!!???
FRIDAY
Once again it was a 7a.m. wake up call.
Friday is slightly a blur, but I am pretty sure this is what I accomplished:
- Cleaned all the wood finishes with wood cleaner. Including an intricate stair case. (This part of the day was by far the most time consuming)
- Cleaned my bathroom. Walls, floors, toilet, counters, mirror, shower/bath.
- Did ALL laundry including washing some of the floor mats in the house and bed sheets.
- Folded and organized the linen closet.
- Prepared light fixtures. We are putting in the down lighting for our new patio/deck.
- SInce we are in the middle of building the deck and it is just plywood, we had to cover the entire thing (30×12) with plastic. This meant ME stapling down plastic and cutting around the posts around the edge. Did I mention it was DARK and there are NO SIDES??
- Put a coat of mud on the ceiling where we had to cut a hole to wire the outside of the house.
FInished the night by ordering pizza and going to bed after watching the new episode of White Collar (creepy moment – a commercial for the show came on as I typed those two words).
SATURDAY
6:50 in the morning, on a Saturday, never good. I had been needing to go to the chiropractor for some time, but needing to save money, I have not been as willing to put up the $30 for each visit. The pain in my arm was finally enough to force me to go, so my parents and my dog (yes you read that right) went to our chiropractor. My mother was the only one in the group who didn’t get an adjustment.
My father and I ate cold leftover pizza for breakfast as my mother went the healthy route and opted for pumpkin pie and whipped cream.
Saturday was a day dedicated to the patio. A day that spelled disaster for my fingers.
My mother and I had the task of caulking the 26 rows of 30 foot tongue and groove boards that make up the ceiling under the deck. One of us used the caulking gun as the other followed behind to spread the caulk with a finger and then finish with a rag. We switched jobs throughout the five hours that it took us (thank God we have our contractor’s scaffolding at home to use), but both of our fingers are now raw and in some places missing several layers of skin. It sucks.
Anyway, we did get to have a little fun when we went to walk around of the the outdoor malls by our house and then went to dinner. And I finally got to see one of my friends since he came along.
Somehow the night got a little interesting when my dad suddenly got a pinched nerve in his back as we got to the restaurant for dinner. Needless to say he was in a lot of pain and was quite restless trying to find a position that didn’t hurt, or something that might fix it.
SUNDAY – Today
Today (or Sunday if you are reading this another day) seemed rather pointless. I once again woke up early to get stuff done, but since my dad was still in pain, we spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out something to fix him or make him feel better. You may be asking why we didn’t take him to a doctor, well he is quite stubborn and refused to go.
I actually got to get away from all of the work around the house today since I got to go to lunch with a few of my high school friends since they were in town. Although I had to put a few coats of mud on the ceiling again and do some more cleaning.
After lunch with my friends we put up the Christmas lights outside. We are a group of perfectionists when it comes to creativity, so it took some time. My mother and I then went to the fabulous 99 Cent Store where we found some awesome decorations (I will try to share later this week).
AND…. since we weren’t given left overs on Thanksgiving and it felt un-American to not eat leftovers for days and days, we decided to just give ourselves a second Thanksgiving.
As I am writing this, I am getting one of my very few times to sit down this entire break. I cannot believe I have to go to work tomorrow. Are you sure I can’t take a weekend now?
Well that is it. I am VERY sorry if I have bored you, and I know this was super long. This weekend was exhausting and I am sure I did not successfully explain why it was so rough.
Happy Holidays everyone!!
